DT01: No Advanced Users Left Behind - Discovery for All

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The University of Southern California Libraries’ implemented Summon in 2010 and since 2012 it has been the primary search option on our homepage. The Summon Working Group, also established in 2012, has lobbied for enhancements and modifications geared towards making Summon a search tool that meets the needs of both novice and advanced researchers. While Summon appears to be satisfying the basic research needs of most undergraduates, it remains problematic for our more advanced users (faculty, graduate students and librarians). This presentation will share the results of a study conducted in 2014 about how well Summon handles known item searches. We will also provide details on the pain points USC’s advanced users have experienced, garnered through usability studies and surveys. We will offer suggestions for enhancements to ensure that Summon is able to provide the precision search options and targeted results today’s advanced researchers demand.
